Super East Collegiate Hockey League

In the mid-1990’s, several teams who were looking to create a ultra competitive league that would be a significant influence on the national rankings came together to form the Super East Collegiate Hockey League (SECHL). The SECHL was informally created in 1995. The 1996-97 season was the first season that the league was formally organized with Marist College winning the first SECHL title. In four short years, the SECHL has become the power conference in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (aka ACHA) at the Division II level.

Although the league has never had more than nine teams every year since the league was formed, the SECHL has sent at least two representatives (out of four from the Northeast) to the ACHA Division II National Tournament. In addition to that, the league has had two members, Rutgers and Drexel, move their programs to the ACHA Division I level.
The league receives applications from many teams wishing to apply for membership to the SECHL. In most years, anywhere between ten to twelve schools apply for admittance to the SECHL. The league has been exceptionally selective by denying over 80% of the teams that inquire about membership. The league looks for programs that are recognized by their respective institution and encourage excellence on the ice and, more importantly, in the classroom. This year the league will consist of seven teams. League expansion will continue to be done in small incremental steps to ensure that only the most competitive programs are accepted into the Super East Collegiate Hockey League.

The league has one scheduled coaches meeting each year in the Spring. At this meeting, the previous year is discussed as well as future initiatives within the league. On all matters requiring a vote, all teams have one vote. First year or probationary members do not have a vote but are encouraged to participate fully in the discussion. Since the advent of the SECHL, only one probationary member has not been granted full member status the following year. The league commissioner is not affiliated with any team and only votes in cases of a tie vote among the coaches.
